The recent news from ecological researchers and surveys on the environmental impact of the water supply plan of piping in water from miles away and utilizing sources such as underground rivers that feed the Nevada Desert Springs would indicate that the plan is ecologically unsound. Unfortunately, this leaves the Las Vegas area with little alternative, seeing as there are no other water sources available in the area. With the phenomenal growth in the area fueled by Las Vegas shows and Las Vegas attractions, the Las Vegas area has quickly outgrown its resources and has been forced to look elsewhere for replenishment of the precious life-giving liquid. Without an available source of water, the Las Vegas area will not be able to sustain the continued growth that is vital to the area. Considering Las Vegas and its dependence on the tourism industry, a shortage of water in the area would be a disastrous occurrence and would very likely have long-lasting effects on the critical tourism industry in the area.
While city planners and community leaders have been wrangling with the problem of providing more water for the area, many environmental activists are pointing out that there is no easy solution and that the water supply in the area cannot be utilized in this manner without serious and long lasting damage to the local ecological system. With the typical environmental lobbyists at work, it is very likely that the Las Vegas area will not see any relief in its water shortages and other problems for some time to come. What effect this will ultimately have on the famous Las Vegas shows and Las Vegas attractions as well as the world famous Las Vegas hotels and casinos remains to be seen, but it is a definite fact that without new sources of water, the Las Vegas area will be confronted with serious problems in a very short period of time.
Among the difficulties in the Las Vegas area is the desire by homeowners to continue watering their lawns as they see fit. Without following the instructions set forth by the local city officials, the Las Vegas community will never be able to minimize their impact on the local resources enough to make a difference in the consumption of the local water supply. Enforcing existing regulations would go a long way towards minimizing the impact of Las Vegas on its available area water supply.
